5 Simple DIY Projects to Enhance the Appeal of Your Home
1. A Fresh Coat of Paint to Refresh and Modernise
This project would give your home an instant facelift. If you have the paint that’s been used on your house previously, you could do some internal and external touchups on the problem areas. If you have more time, you could completely repaint certain rooms of your home to update them for 2020. Neutral colour paints are always the safest option – think whites, beiges or soft greys. Not only are these colours more on trend, they will appeal to a wider range of buyers if you do decide to sell your home down the track.
2. Spruce up your Garden and Outdoor Spaces
So often we see beautiful houses that are dragged down by an overgrown or unkempt garden. A well-maintained garden can create a great first impression, plus it’s a relaxing place to spend time in. Your garden spruce up list could include things like, weeding, cut-back of overgrown plants, tidying up garden edges, pressure hose cleaning of outdoor paving or decking, or laying of new tan bark / mulch.
3. Changing over Fixtures
Fixtures such as drawer handles, light switch plates or doorknobs could be replaced to modernise your home, particularly in important rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms. Replacing light fittings is also an option, as these can be a main feature of a room. Before replacing any larger items it could be worth seeking the opinion of an interior designer (or a vendor advocate if you are considering selling down the track) to guide your choices.
4. Deep Clean your Carpet
Carpet fibres can be very good at hiding nasties such as dog hair, allergens, dead skin and general dirt and dust. Sometimes we haven’t even noticed the stains on our carpet until now when we are spending more time at home. Luckily it’s relatively inexpensive to hire a carpet-cleaning machine from outlets such as Woolworths or Bunnings, to really give your carpet a deep clean that can’t be achieved by a simple vacuum. Each room only takes about 20 minutes, so you could easily do the whole house in less than a day. If you are time poor, it’s also relatively inexpensive to hire a company to clean your carpets.
5. A Spring Clean of your Home – In Winter!
Cleaning the areas generally overlooked during the year, such as cleaning out exhaust fans, sky lights, curtains and light fittings can undoubtedly freshen up your home. If you are really clever, you could also consider replacing your grout or silicone in tiled areas or around fixtures such as a vanity bench. An older line of silicone, for example, may have collected mould – so a fresh new line could really “lift” that area. It’s important to be sure if it’s actually grout or silicon that needs to be replaced before doing this work.
